The Old School Rooms

Location: Richmond, North Yorkshire

We were appointed to secure planning consent for the sensitive conversion of the Old Primary School in Richmond into residential accommodation. Formerly operating as a business centre, the building’s commercial use was no longer viable.

Our brief was to maximise residential potential while preserving the character of this heritage asset. The design introduced mezzanine bedroom pods within the generous, high-ceilinged spaces—allowing us to create four high-quality units without major alterations to the roof structure.

Thoughtfully integrated storage, efficient spatial planning, and minimal intervention to the building envelope ensured a balance between heritage preservation and modern living. Planning was successfully granted, recognising the innovative and respectful approach to adaptive reuse.
